Marine Piling and Concrete Sub-Structure

Operating as a subcontractor for Prismatic Development Corporation, EIC Associates, Inc. installed the pile-supported sub-structure for a ramp and offshore concrete structure for a new $145 million Dept. of Sanitation trash transfer station.  The contract consisted of 72 – 36” diameter open-end pipe piles exceeding 120 feet in length and 341 – 30” diameter open end pipe piles exceeding 150 feet.  Upland piles consisted of 14” to 18” closed-ended concrete-filled pipe piles.  Pile capacities ranged from 425 to 900 kips.  The pile installation included an offshore pile test program consisting of eight compression load tests between 425 and 1400 kips, and one lateral load test.

EIC Associates prefabricated ten concrete pile caps for the access ramps, each weighing 80 to 110 tons and delivered them by barge.   The structures were then floated into position, braced, and 36” piles were driven through sleeves cast in the floors.  This operation saved many weeks of field work.

EIC also constructed the concrete components of the 235’ x 295’ sub-structure including the pile caps, transverse beams, fender beams, and the composite concrete deck.
